PhotoItalia, October 21-27, 2012

Ever wish you could take photographs in the most beautiful place on Earth but just couldn’t take that first step? Well, now you can! Fall 2012 I’ll be leading a group of up to 15 photographers for 7 days through the ancient and modern worlds of Tuscany and Umbria in central Italy! We’ll shoot a wide variety of subjects on this trip from nature to antiquities; from models to nightlife. We’ll see incredible sights, learn a few things and most of all, have fun doing it!

Spouses and friends are welcome to come along for all of the shooting and touring while the photographers in the group will also be meeting for a little classroom time and critique. As well as having lots of free time to shoot the scenery, we’ll be exploring the following topics:

  • Use composition to add visual interest to your photos and score higher in print competitions.
  • Learn to look for quality light both indoors and out.
  • Shoot successful portraits while avoiding common, unflattering mistakes.
  • Use off-camera lighting for dramatic effects.
  • Effective, natural posing that will add life to your people photos.
  • Think on the fly and take advantage of whatever opportunities present themselves.
  • Learn workflow tips to help you shoot and process your images more productively.

The morning fog hangs over the hillside vineyards of Tuscany.

Through our expert, local guides, we’ll get a ground-level view of Italy that few tourists see.

We’ll also have a photo session with live models. A perfect opportunity to add to your portfolio!

It would be impossible to visit Italy without taking a break at some world-class wineries!

Frances Mayes adopted the town of Cortona as her second home in her book, Under the Tuscan Sun.

There will be plenty of time to live the nightlife as the locals do … and of course this includes gelato!

And most of all, make new friends!

The tour will start and end in Rome. It’ll be a busy week so bring your walking shoes!

Day 1: Meet at the Rome airport where we will be picked up for our trip to Orvieto. Along the way, we’ll visit the ancient cities of Tuscania and Civita di Bagnoregio. Then we’ll continue to Orvieto for an unforgettable Italian meal and a stay in a 4-star hotel.

Day 2: We’ll tour Orvieto seeing the Pozzo di San Patrizio and the Torre del Moro before checking out an underground wine cellar for a tasting of fine, Umbrian wine. We’ll finish our touring (but not necessarily our shooting!) with dinner overlooking Civita di Bagnoregi.

Day 3: We’ll leave Orvieto and head toward Spoleto and its walls from the 5th century B.C. On the way, we’ll make stops at the beautiful town of Narni and see the spectacular Cascata delle Marmore (the Marmore Falls). We’ll spend the night in a converted monastery, Eremo delle Grazie.

Day 4: We’ll spend the morning on the narrow, medieval streets of Spoleto visiting the Duomo and the Tower Bridge. After lunch, we’ll move on to San Francesco in Assisi, a city not to be missed! We’ll have dinner (and more wine) in Spello.

Day 5: We’ll say goodbye to Umbria to spend some time under the Tuscan sun in our home base of Cortona. We’ll visit the Fortezza del Girifalco (Fortress of Girifalco) and learn about dramatic lighting with a photo session there. Cortona is the perfect place for some tasty gelato and people watching!

Day 6: We’ll spend time in the beautiful city of Siena and see the incredible Cathedral of Siena and the famous Piazza del Campo. In the afternoon, we’ll visit the “ancient skyscrapers” of San Gimignano and have a dinner feast of truffle and wild boar!

Day 7: This will be gear-packing day as we head back to Rome for the flight home after shooting lots of fantastic images and and making lots of life-long friends. But there may be a couple of secret destinations along the way!

This workshop tour is limited to just 15 attendees (not including non-attending spouses and friends) so that we’ll all have a more intimate shooting and learning experience.

Cost: $2795 per workshop attendee (based on double occupancy), $2495 for non-attendees. Single occupancy would be an additional $400 per person. $1000 is required to hold your spot.

Included are hotels, breakfasts, dinners, ground transportation, tour guides and museum tickets. Airfare and any personal expenses are not included.

This truly is the trip of a lifetime! Don’t miss out!
